American History - The Revolutionary War

Sometimes people forget that in order to get freedom we have to fight for it. A famous hip hop group said it best "We have to fight for our right to party." Do you know who that group was? For one group to get along with another they have to earn Respect/Trust one another. From that you will get to share some responsibilities, then earn some privileges which in turn will create some independence and eventual freedom.
As people, we forget what it means to be free? Are we really free in america or do we think we are? I know I am free and I will die trying to keep my freedom and everyone else in this country. Without it we don't have a future, and with no future, we can't be successful.
Our Forefathers were right, Freedom is our right as human beings. Without it, we are just dogs sibjugated to a master's orders. WE ARE FREE!!!!!!!!!!!

Objective: Students will go on the http://broward.atomiclearning.com and learn how to use MS Excel. They must listen to all the tutorials. They must follow the same steps as they did to listen to MS Word. Students with Desktops must listen to 2007 Microsoft Excel Intro. If students are using the laptops, they must listen to 2003 Microsoft Excel Intro.

1. Step 1: Decide which fast food restaurant you would like to visit. Go to that restaurant’s website. Here is a list of some of those restaurants:

• Wendy’s
• Arby’s

If you need to find other restaurants you can go to http://nutriondata.com/

2. Step 2: Once There, plan a meal with a sandwich, salad or other main dish, a side dish (French fries, etc…) a drink, and a dessert. For each item on your menu, record the total calories and the calories from fat.
3. Step 3: Enter your data in a Excel Spreadsheet. It is similar like you did in MS Word but a little different. Make sure you listen to the tutorials. Make sure your spreadsheet has columns and rows set up.
4. Step 4: Go MS Word and type and 3 paragraph report about your findings.
• Paragraph 1: Introduction includes which restaurant you chose, the website and the items on your menu.
• Paragraph 2: Summarize your findings on your meal, including number of calories, percentage of fat, etc…
• Paragraph 3: Go to the following site: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/dga/dguide95.html Use the information from the Dept. Of Agriculture to evaluate your meal. How does your percentage of fat compare to the percentage recommended? What about other guidelines like eating fruits and vegetables.? Have you planned a healthy meal? What changes might you make in your meal to make it healthier?
• Go to tools on your tool bar and do spellcheck. Make sure everything is right.

TO FIGURE OUT TOTAL CALORIES FROM FAT, DIVIDE FAT CALORIES BY REGULAR CALORIES.

TO FIGURE OUT TOTAL CALORIES, TOTAL FAT CALORIES, AND TOTAL NON-FAT CALORIES, YOU CAN USE THE AUTO SUM BUTTON. TO FIGURE OUT THE TOTAL PERCENTAGE OF FAT, DIVIDE TOTAL CALORIES BY TOTAL FAT CALORIES.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, GO BACK TO ATOMIC LEARNING AND LISTEN TO THE TUTORIALS, THEY WILL HELP YOU.

Tech Assignment #6 - Simulating Earthquakes

Yesterday Japan and Indonesia had earthquakes. Earthquakes are powerful natural events and students will simulate how they work.

Student Directions:
1. Go to the following link to to launch the website:
http://tlc.discovery.com/convergence/quakes/interactives/makeaquake.html

Make sure you keep track of your data that you create using the columns Mr. De Maria gave you as a guideline. The aftermath column should contain a summary of the outcome of your earthquake.

3. Did you find that the location of the building makes a difference? Did you notice if certain types of earthquake-proofing construction worked better than others? Did you notice how much the size of the earthquake affected the survival of the building? Record your findings in the "aftermath" column. You may want to write all your information a paper first before creating your MS Word chart.

4. Put all your information on your MS Word Chart and email me the results. Don't forget your name and assignment number in the subject box.

"A Melting Pot"

We as americans are made up of different nationalities. We are called the Melting pot society, the society that is blended and unique from the rest of the world. Most times we get along, but occasionally disagreements do flare up.
We have two Presidential candidates running this year. They both come from different backgrounds, different economic status's and different political party's but what makes this so great is in the end we are all "Americans."
Attached you is the first quarter 8th grade US History project. This assignment is a collage but a collage that blends every aspect of our past and present cultures into one board.

1st Quarter Project
U.S. History
Mr. DeMaria

Students are to cut out pictures for the following categories:

People, Places and or Things.

Using a poster board the size of 20x30 or larger. Students are to create a collage and a title for their project. It can be one category or more. You must have a title on your poster.

Kool Teacher, Amp and Stuff: Two Heads.

Kool Teacher, Amp and Stuff: Two Heads.

Two Heads.

Students will start to work in pairs in the History classes. They will have to choose a reliable partner and work together to do classwork. All classwork must be done in class for credit. Homework is assigned on an individual basis.
In Internet Explorer, students have their computer, which also has a brain and can help students like a partner can. Students have to complete all classwork in class during an alotted time. Students must have headphones to listen to tutorials on Atomic Learning. Students with computers at home can listen to tutorials. All passwords have been given to them in class.
It is better to use two heads than one when coming to working together. Just like Barack Obama who on Saturday chose his vice presidential running candidate, Sen. Joe Biden. Now Barack has a second person on his ticket that can help and encourage him in time of need.
Teachers, players and spouses work in or on teams so they can be better and successful. It is important to strive to learn more in life rather than life pass you by.

1st Day Back at The Glen

Wow where did the summer go? I hope you had a great summer. Forest Glen MS has attained an A rating again. Seven straight years, what an accomplishment. This tells you that the teachers and staff care a lot about their students. Just a few teachers left, so we still have the best staff in Broward County.
This year at The Glen there are a lot of changes. New computer systems, higher standards and stricter passing requirements. Please refer to your Broward County School Board Student Handbook for the new rules.
This blog will be used to post information like tests, assignments, projects and any other important information. If you have any questions you can email me at techteacher@rocketmail.com.
